CORDLESS MOTORIZED DESIGN
BACKINFIVE LLC ("Company," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to the safety and well-being of children. We recognize that window coverings with accessible cords, chains, or loops pose serious strangulation hazards to young children. We take child safety seriously and design all our products to meet or exceed stringent safety standards.
All BACKINFIVE motorized window shades are designed with a completely cordless operation, eliminating the risk of strangulation hazards associated with traditional corded window treatments.
1.1 No Accessible Cords or Chains
- Our motorized shades do not have pull cords, lift cords, chains, or loops accessible to children
- All operating mechanisms are contained within the headrail or motor housing
- Shades are controlled via remote control, smartphone app, wall switch, or voice commands—none of which involve dangling cords
1.2 Rechargeable Battery Operation
- Our shades operate on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, eliminating the need for electrical cords or hardwiring during normal operation
- Charging cables are intended for temporary use only and should be kept out of reach of children when in use
2. COMPLIANCE WITH SAFETY STANDARDS
BACKINFIVE motorized window shades are designed and manufactured in compliance with applicable child safety standards, including:
2.1 ANSI/WCMA A100.1 Standard Our products comply with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) Standard for Safety of Corded Window Covering Products (ANSI/WCMA A100.1), which establishes performance requirements and test methods to minimize strangulation hazards.
2.2 CPSC Guidelines We adhere to guidelines issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding the safe design and use of window coverings to prevent child injuries and fatalities.
2.3 Best Practices for Child Safety We continuously monitor industry developments, safety recalls, and emerging best practices to ensure our products meet the highest safety standards.
3. WHY CORDLESS MATTERS
3.1 Strangulation Hazards of Corded Window Coverings According to the CPSC and WCMA, corded window coverings are among the top five hidden hazards in American homes for young children. Between 1986 and 2023, hundreds of children have died from strangulation involving window covering cords.
Common hazards associated with corded window coverings include:
- Pull cords and lift cords: Children can become entangled in looped cords or continuous cord loops
- Inner cords: Accessible cords within the shade mechanism can pose risks if exposed
- Bead chains: Metal or plastic bead chains used for operation can form loops that pose strangulation risks
3.2 Motorized Solutions Eliminate Risks By eliminating all accessible cords, chains, and loops, motorized window shades provide a safer alternative for homes with young children and pets. Motorization removes the need for manual operation, significantly reducing the risk of accidental injury.
4. SAFE INSTALLATION AND USE GUIDELINES
While BACKINFIVE motorized shades are designed to be cordless and child-safe, we recommend the following precautions to ensure maximum safety:
4.1 Proper Installation
- Ensure shades are securely mounted to the wall or window frame using the provided mounting brackets and hardware
- Follow installation instructions carefully to prevent the shade from becoming loose or detached
- Do not allow children to be present during installation, as tools and hardware may pose hazards
- Confirm that the shade operates smoothly and does not pose any pinching or crushing hazards
4.2 Keep Charging Cables Out of Reach
- Charging cables (USB cables) should be kept out of reach of children when in use
- Do not leave charging cables connected to shades or outlets when not actively charging
- Store charging cables in a secure location inaccessible to young children
4.3 Remote Controls and Wall Switches
- Keep remote controls out of reach of young children to prevent unintended operation
- Wall-mounted switches should be installed at a height inaccessible to small children (recommended height: 48 inches or higher)
- Educate older children on the safe operation of motorized shades
4.4 Regular Inspection and Maintenance
- Periodically inspect shades for signs of wear, damage, or loose components
- Ensure motorized operation functions smoothly and predictably
- If any parts become damaged or accessible (e.g., frayed fabric, exposed internal components), discontinue use and contact BACKINFIVE for repair or replacement
4.5 Supervision
- Always supervise young children near windows with motorized shades
- Educate children about the dangers of climbing on furniture near windows
- Do not place cribs, beds, furniture, or toys near windows where children could access window treatments
5. ADDITIONAL CHILD SAFETY MEASURES
In addition to installing cordless motorized shades, we recommend the following safety measures to protect children near windows:
5.1 Window Guards and Stops
- Install window guards or stops to prevent windows from opening wide enough for a child to fall through
- Ensure windows can be quickly opened by adults in case of emergency
5.2 Furniture Placement
- Do not place cribs, beds, chairs, or other furniture near windows where children could climb and access window treatments or fall out of windows
5.3 Cord Safety for Other Products
- If you have other corded window coverings in your home, consider replacing them with cordless or motorized alternatives
- If replacement is not immediately possible, use cord cleats, tensioners, or tie-downs to keep cords out of reach
